"Opening August 5th, the exhibition Robert connell: As I See It will be on display through October 1st, 2022 at Davidson Galleries. The exhibition will feature recent paintings on paper from local artist Robert Connell. There will be an opening reception Thursday, August 4th, 2022 from 6-8pm. 

Connell is known for his plein-air paintings that utilize sumi ink and gouache on paper. His work is influenced by both Asian painting techniques and newspaper printing practices, which is how he developed his unique technique combining ink painting on site and applying gouache with a printmaker’s brayer in the studio. His works focus on the Northwest landscape, negative and positive space, and the impact of memory and personal experience on a place.

“My artwork is paintings of personal expression and without the use of photography. I want my landscape paintings to be viewed as a work created by a single individual at a particular time, place and enhanced through memory.” —Robert Connell

Robert Connell (American, b. 1947) was born in Portland, Oregon and raised in Seattle, Washington. He received a BFA in Painting in Drawing from the University of Washington and studied at the American Center for Art and Artists in Paris.
