"Carefully curated to encourage creativity, thoughtful design and a sense of purpose, the Lobby at the Ellen Browning Building’s latest exhibit, “The Drop,” curated by Sima Familant, features works from renowned contemporary artists, including Daniel Buren, Leonardo Drew, Fred Eversley, Sam Gilliam, Jenny Holzer and Jack Whitten.

This exhibit is May - September 2022, and is open Thursday- Friday from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or by appointment.

We invite and welcome the Portland community to "drop by” or make a casual visit to enjoy the art exhibition. In case you aren't able to “drop in” at the days and times listed, we've included a sneak peek of the featured works for you to admire.

Pioneering abstract painter Sam Gilliam passed away at the age of 88 this past month. An instrumental figure in the art world, Gilliam is remembered as the first Black artist to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale. He is most known for his brilliant eye for color and for his technique of painting canvases that flowed without the constraint of wood stretchers. We are honored to be featuring two of his works. You can read more about Sam Gilliam and his legacy here." (Promo Copy)
