J-Names Improv Society Add to a List
The J-Names jokester crew returns with a funny and fresh performance, this time with a few new faces. Jay Flewelling, Jenn Hunter Tinder, Justin Himes, Jed Arkley, Josie Behrens, Jpeg McCarthy, and SJ Santa Cruz (we'll allow it) will strut their improv skills on stage, and there may be some audience prizes up for grabs, too.

Kickstand Comedy in the Park Add to a List
Kickstand Comedy has reprised its hugely popular Comedy in the Park series in Laurelhurst Park, so grab your pals with a sense of humor to catch chill comedy from Adam Pasi, Deborah Wooten-Williams, Elena C. Hayden, Sam Whiteley, and Patti Mansbach. (Spread out your blankets early, folks—2,000 attendees showed up last weekend.)

The Pacheacos and Queer Ye Queer Ye Add to a List
The Pacheacos, a playful Minneapolis-based improv duo currently on a 10-state tour, will drop by Portland to share their unique characters alongside local troupe Queer Ye Queer Ye. (As Portland's "humblest" improv team and the only all-queer team in the city, they love to do "gay stuff" like play in pools and cuddle pets. Same!)

Erzulie Screening, Pre-Parade Movie Party and Meet and Greet Add to a List
In celebration of the Portland Mermaid Festival Add to a List , Clinton Street Theater's week of mermaid-themed screenings draws to a close with this showing of cult fin-flapping horror flick Erzulie, which tells the tale of a fearsome bayou mermaid in a Louisiana swamp. Una the Mermaid will be on site for a water nymph meet and greet before the movie, and film writer and producer Christine Chen will sign movie posters. You might score some mermaid swag, too!

LIVE MUSIC

Battle of the Bands Add to a List
Each Friday for the rest of July, local musicians will battle it out for a chance to headline at ilani’s Muze Lounge along with a $5,000 cash prize. In this week’s grand finale, the top two bands will face off on the casino's parking garage rooftop in front of a panel of judges, while you enjoy tunes, sunshine, food, and games.

My Choice Add to a List
Portland-based rappers Glam Doll, Angel, JusWild, Rhye Gee, and Kanide-Is will join forces for a pro-choice benefit concert in response to the devastating decision made by the Supreme Court. All proceeds will be donated to Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon.

Pop Fever: AAPI Artist Showcase Add to a List
Show up for your AAPI neighbors with a sampling of Portland's top voices in pop music. Alana Rich will get you on your feet with her lyrically profound danceable grooves alongside R&B-influenced singer-songwriter Rain Ezra, captivating rapper Jai Baby, pop hit-machine Victoria Yabut, and hip-hop mastermind Jayme Fortune.

Milwaukie Porchfest Add to a List
Milwaukie residents have offered up their front yards and porches for a full day of live performances in the neighborhood, block party style. Discover the hidden talents within your neighborhood with everything from singers, dancers, bagpipers, guitar players, actors, magicians, and more!

The Tragedie of Othello Add to a List
The Moor of Venice is slowly ruined by the vengeful Iago in the Bard's classic tragedy. The Original Practice Shakespeare Festival brings Othello outdoors, interpreting the Shakespearean ​work in the classic First Folio style (that means limited rehearsal, an onstage prompter, and a fast-paced, improvisational feel). This one's a tragedy, folks, so prepare for someone (or a few someones) to kick the bucket.

Street Bazaar Add to a List
If you dig the Portland Flea, you'll love this colorful mash-up of the city's food, drink, music, and art scenes, complete with mouthwatering street fare from Buddy's Steaks, Hapa Pizza, and Birrieria Jalisco, plus festive cocktails from Zoo Bar. Over thirty artists will be on site to share their bright, contemporary works, and an epic dance battle will set the vibes for the evening.

Portlandia Mermaid Parade and Festival 2022 Add to a List
If you're a fan of Portlandia, the larger-than-life river goddess sculpture that looms above downtown's Portland Building, you might dig this fin-flapping celebration of Portland's rivers and port history. The Portlandia Mermaid Parade and Festival is a body-positive, family-friendly event that gathers the fantastical creatives helping our city thrive. This year's Pride-centered theme is Rainbow Waters: A Shellabration of Queer Merfolk, so throw on your most colorful aquatic attire and prepare to get soggy (the day wraps up with a fountain-splashing mob dance event).

If you're languishing without air conditioning this weekend, crawl over to well-shaded Kenilworth Park for a community party and screening of martial arts thrill ride Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. (We recommend bringing one of these guys.)

Each Saturday morning for the next seven weeks, Cinema 21 will screen a legendary film from the '70s. Far out! The Seven From the '70s series continues this week with Harold and Maude, a beloved cult flick about funny, forbidden love. The series was programmed by local film expert and professor Elliot Lavine—he's been directing and exhibiting films since the late '70s, so he knows his stuff.

Cool off this summer with this slushie-centric street party from Imperial Bottle Shop & Taproom. This is She Add to a List
Aiming to amplify the voices of BIPOC women, this five-week series of afternoon events includes presentations and performances by multicultural musicians, educators, and entrepreneurs. The series continues on July 30 with a multimedia discussion on transgenerational trauma led by Yuan-Chen Li, a Taiwanese American composer.

World Naked Bike Ride Add to a List
Get "as bare as you dare" during the annual bike ride that definitely helps keep Portland weird. The ride aims to highlight the vulnerability of cyclists everywhere and bring attention to society’s dependence on pollution-based transportation.

With over 60 local artists showcasing their work, this open studio event at Northwest Marine Art Works is a must-see opportunity to explore the historic World War II-era buildings while enjoying a feast for the senses. Visitors will find everything from handcrafted jewelry and apparel to paintings, prints, and ceramics on site, plus live musical performances, artist-led demos, and munchies from Pizza Thief and Phil's Bento Bar.

Blumenauer Bridge Opening Celebration Add to a List
This Sunday, the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) will host a community gathering celebrating the brand-new Congressman Earl Blumenauer Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge. The bridge will offer a vital car-free connection between the Lloyd and Central Eastside neighborhoods—stop by to check it out and take part in community-led bike rides. Congressman Blumenauer himself and Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty (who oversees PBOT) will be on site to speak, and visitors will find pop-up block parties on nearby streets.

Church of Film: The Brother from Another Planet Add to a List
Distract yourself from the heat and drop by hip hangout The Red Fox for a free screening of The Brother From Another Planet, a "Reagan-era space oddity" following an alien who crash-lands on Ellis Island. While being pursued by shadowy figures from his home planet, he finds his home in Harlem, where an intrepid crew of cabaret singers, working-class folks, arcade lovers, and layabouts join together to protect the extraterrestrial from the authorities.

Organized by "wizard activists" PDXpelliarmus, this event helps raise funds for Basic Rights Oregon and collects books for local teachers and children. Whether you hail from Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin house, attendees can take part in a horcrux hunt, Hogwarts student portraiture, costume contests, and trivia. Magical vendors will hawk their wares in Diagon Alley and Knockturn Alley, and the butterbeer will be flowing to keep your thirst magically quenched.

Andrea Alonge looks for "where joy lives" in this technicolor multimedia exhibition. The radiant geometric forms of Ain’t No Dark ‘Til Something Shines offer a brief respite from the humdrum doom-scrolling of the "real world." Alonge's works feel more like a sugary fantasy, and they're a lot of fun.

April Waters: Water-Ice-Sky, Antarctica Add to a List
Hallie Ford Museum of Art knows you're hot, sweaty, and annoyed, so they're offering free admission July 26-30. Beat the heat inside the museum and check out Salem-based artist April Waters's Water-Ice-Sky, Antarctica, a frosty exhibition of paintings from her trip to Antarctica as a grantee of the National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writers Program. (We're cooling down already.) The artist's studies and sketches of the Marr Glacier led to this series of works, which illustrate the unusual beauty of a landscape in the midst of climate crisis.

Every Corner is Alive Add to a List
Like most students, PNCA's Low Residency MFA in Visual Studies candidates have been through a lot over the last few years. Their exhibition series, Every Corner is Alive, considers this cultural moment of grief and uncertainty through an expansive environmental lens. Stashia Cabral, Élan Chardin, Laura Jean Foster, Amy Gibson, Ondrea Levey, Kelly Marshall, lynn ruth stephens, Devon Pardue, Jenny Wilde, and Ahuva S. Zaslavsky ponder and cultivate embodied, shared environments in a wide range of mediums. Each week, a new solo exhibition or exhibition series will be installed, so pop by throughout the summer for a fresh dose of inspiration.

Kelli Connell: Double Life, 20 Years Add to a List
Kelli Connell's images are surprisingly tricky—they appear to depict two women in a relationship, but are actually digitally manipulated images of the same model doubled. With a focus on the layered, fluid nature of selfhood, Connell's long-term photographic project Double Life, 20 Years creates believable stories pulled from everyday situations, inviting the viewer to consider their own dualities and complex inner worlds. See Kelli Connell's large-scale photographs before this exhibition closes on July 30.
